MLE Lawn Landscape and Tree Service takes care of yards in Matthews the way most people wish their last lawn guy had: same day every week, edges cut sharp, clippings blown off the driveway, and a phone number that the owner actually answers. We handle the weekly lawn work, the seasonal bed work, and the limbs that keep scraping your gutters, so one call covers the whole yard.
Matthews sits in Mecklenburg County on the southeast edge of Charlotte, and the yards here run the full range. There are old lots with oaks and pecans near downtown, tidy fescue lawns in the 1980s and 1990s neighborhoods off Sardis Road, and newer builds along Weddington Road where the sod is still settling into the red clay. Each one needs something a little different, and that is how we quote it.
Lawn care in Matthews
Most Matthews lawns do best on weekly lawn care from spring green-up through October, then every other week as growth slows. A normal visit looks like this:
- Mowing at the right height for your grass. Fescue gets cut high, around three and a half to four inches, and higher still in the heat of July and August so it shades its own roots. Bermuda and zoysia get cut lower and more often.
- Edging along the driveway, the sidewalk, and the curb so the lines stay crisp between visits.
- String trimming around the mailbox, fence posts, the AC unit, and anything else the mower cannot reach.
- Blowing off the driveway, walks, porch, and patio before we leave.
We also do one-time cleanups: the overgrown rental that needs to look right before a showing, the backyard that got away from you over a busy summer, or the fall leaf cleanup when the oaks finally let go in November. See seasonal yard cleanup in Matthews for what a spring or fall visit covers.

Landscaping in Matthews
Beds are where a yard either looks kept or looks tired. Our landscaping work in Matthews is mostly the practical stuff that makes the biggest difference for the money:
- Mulch and pine straw. We clean out the beds, pull weeds, cut a fresh edge, and put down hardwood mulch or long-leaf pine straw at the right depth. Pine straw is popular in Matthews because it suits the shady, tree-heavy lots and stays put on a slope. More on mulch and pine straw in Matthews.
- Shrub trimming. Hollies, boxwoods, azaleas, and the foundation shrubs that are creeping over the windows get shaped back so they look full, not scalped. See shrub trimming in Matthews for timing by shrub type.
- Planting. Replacing dead shrubs, adding seasonal color by the front walk, or planting material you already bought.
If your fescue thinned out over the summer, fall is when to think about aeration and overseeding. Clay soil packs down hard, and a thin lawn needs help to fill back in. Core aeration pulls plugs of soil so water, air, and seed can get to the roots, and overseeding right behind it thickens the lawn back up. In the Charlotte area that job belongs in September and early October. Ask about it when you call and we will tell you straight whether it is something we can fit into your fall schedule.
Tree trimming and limb removal
Matthews has a lot of mature trees, and they do not stop growing just because the house is in the way. Our tree service covers the routine work: cutting limbs back off the roof and gutters, raising low branches over the driveway and sidewalk, clearing dead wood before a storm brings it down, and taking out small trees that are crowding a bed or a fence line. Brush gets chipped or hauled off, and the yard gets blown clean before we leave. Late winter is the best time for most pruning, but dead or hanging limbs should come down whenever you notice them.
Hardscaping, pressure washing, and other property work
One company for the whole yard also covers the jobs that are not mowing or beds. If a worn path across the lawn needs to become a real walkway, see hardscaping in Matthews. The red clay that splashes onto driveways every time it rains, and the mildew on shaded walks under the big oaks, come off with pressure washing in Matthews. After a storm, or before a house goes on the market, the brush pile and the junk behind the shed can go too, with junk removal in Matthews. And when the back gate drags on the ground or a fence section starts leaning after a wet winter, we handle fence and gate repair in Matthews, often on the same visit as the limb work above it.

Matthews neighborhoods we work in
We come out Sardis Road from our base near Cotswold, so the older neighborhoods on that side of town are the easiest to reach. That includes Sardis Forest and Stonehaven, where the lots are established, the trees are big, and the beds usually need more attention than the grass does. Around Matthews Township Parkway, the subdivisions tend to be fescue lawns with a lot of edging along sidewalks and cul-de-sacs.
In downtown Matthews, around John Street and Trade Street, the houses are older, the lots are smaller, and the trees are the main event. Tight side yards and fenced backyards mean push mowers and hand trimming, and we price for that honestly. Heading south, the Weddington Road corridor has newer construction where the lawn is young, the builder beds are thin, and a first round of mulch, pine straw, and shrub shaping makes a big difference.
Why homeowners in Matthews call MLE
- You talk to the person doing the work. No call center, no salesperson, no crew that changes every week.
- One call for the whole yard. Mowing, beds, and limb work from the same people, on the same schedule.
- Clear quotes before we start. You know the price per visit or per job up front.
- No long-term contract. Stay because the yard looks good, not because you signed something.
Matthews lawn care questions
When should I aerate and overseed a fescue lawn in Matthews?
Fall. Tall fescue is a cool-season grass, and in the Charlotte area the window runs from about the start of September to mid-October, with September being the best of it. Soil is still warm enough for seed to sprout, and the seedlings get two cool seasons to root in before July heat. Spring overseeding usually fails here because young fescue cannot handle its first summer. Bermuda and zoysia lawns are different: aerate those in late spring or early summer while they are actively growing.
Do you charge per visit or a monthly rate?
Mowing is quoted per visit, based on the size of the lot, how much edging and trimming it takes, and how often you want us out. If you would rather pay a set amount each month through the growing season, ask when you call and we will work out what that looks like for your yard. Bed work, mulch, pine straw, and tree work are quoted as one-time jobs.
Is small tree work included, or is that a separate company?
It is us. We trim limbs off roofs and driveways, raise canopies so you can mow and walk under them, take out small trees and dead limbs, and haul off the brush. Big removals that need a crane or a bucket truck are a different kind of job, and if yours is one of those we will tell you so on the first visit instead of guessing.
Do I have to sign a contract for weekly mowing?
No. There is no long-term contract. You can start with weekly service in the growing season, drop to every other week when growth slows in late fall, and stop when you need to.
How soon can you start at a new house in Matthews?
It depends on the time of year. Spring fills up fastest. Call (704) 634-0393 and we will give you a straight answer on when the first visit can happen and what day of the week you would land on.
