Beds are where a yard either looks kept or looks tired. A mowed lawn next to faded, weedy beds still reads as neglected from the street. Fresh mulch or pine straw is the fastest way to change that, and it does real work too: it holds moisture in the clay through hot Matthews summers, keeps weeds down, and protects shrub roots. How we do a mulch or pine straw job
- Walk the beds. We look at what is there now, how deep the old layer is, and whether you want mulch, pine straw, or both.
- Clean out. Weeds pulled, leaves and debris cleared, and old material removed if it is too thick or has broken down.
- Cut a fresh edge. A clean edge between lawn and bed keeps grass from creeping in and makes the whole yard look sharper.
- Spread it evenly. Hardwood mulch goes down at a steady depth, usually two to three inches, and is kept pulled back from tree trunks and shrub stems. Pine straw is tucked along the edges so it stays neat.
- Clean up. Walks, driveway, and lawn blown off before we leave.
Mulch vs. pine straw in Matthews yards
Pine straw is popular in Matthews because it suits the shady, tree-heavy lots on the older side of town and stays put on a slope. We use long-leaf pine straw, which lies flat and holds its color. Hardwood mulch looks more finished along the foundation and the front walk. On established lots in Sardis Forest and Stonehaven, a mix of both is common. On newer houses along the Weddington Road corridor, the builder beds often start with a thin layer over bare clay, and the first real round of mulch makes a big difference.
When to put it down
Spring is the most popular time, because beds look their worst after winter and a fresh layer carries through summer. A fall refresh is a good call if you are hosting for the holidays, selling, or just tired of looking at faded beds. Pine straw fades faster than mulch, so some beds get it twice a year.
Mulch and pine straw in Indian Trail
In Indian Trail, most of our bed work is in newer subdivisions off US 74, Old Monroe Road, and Indian Trail Road. Builder beds there tend to be a thin layer of mulch over compacted clay with a row of small shrubs that either take off or give up. We clean them out, cut a real edge, and put down a proper layer so the beds look finished and the HOA stays happy.
Mulch and pine straw in Mint Hill
Mint Hill yards are bigger, so the beds usually are too. Pine straw is the practical choice for the large natural areas under trees at the back of the lot, because it costs less to cover a lot of ground. Hardwood mulch looks sharp along the foundation and front walk. A lot of Mint Hill homeowners use both, and we quote them together.

Both hold moisture and keep weeds down. Pine straw costs less to cover large areas, stays put on slopes, and suits wooded lots. Hardwood mulch looks more finished next to the house and breaks down a little slower. Plenty of yards use mulch by the front walk and pine straw out under the trees.
How often should beds be refreshed?
Most properties around Charlotte do well with fresh mulch once a year, usually in spring. Pine straw fades faster and can be refreshed once or twice a year depending on the bed.
Do you remove the old mulch first?
We look at each bed. If the old layer is too thick or has broken down into soil, we pull it out first. If it is in decent shape, we top-dress it so the total depth stays right instead of piling on more every year.
Can you plant a few shrubs while you are doing the beds?
Yes. We can replace shrubs that died, add seasonal color by the front walk, or plant material you already bought, then mulch around it.
